Dave Hemmerle’s Notes about serving with the 601st TMCS - (OL 8) 1961 -1962 Landshut Germany

In 1961 with the Cold War building to its peak, president Kennedy activated 61,000 Reserve and Air National Guard. As a member of the Ohio Air National Guards,123rd. Aircraft Control and Waring Squadron we were activated and deployed to Landshut, Germany. We were billeted at Pinder Kaserne.

Within the first week seven of us were assigned to the 601st, Tactical Missile Control Squadron (TMCS). Although the 601st TMCS was located at Rothwesten, West Germany it had several Offsite Locations one of which was the 601st TMCS (OL 8) located near Landshut Germany.

The 601st Operation Location or Offsite Location (OL8 ) , was located about 4 miles out of Landshut, Germany, on a hill top. Our call sign/sigth was also known as “Foot Crow Alpha” (for Forward Control Alpha), and was operational in October 1961 thru July 1962. OL8 was equipped with an AN/MSQ 1A , that had the extended range and reduced jamming enhancement packages installed.

The 601st also had about six or seven officers divided over the three crews. There was also 601st, personnel consisting of:
3 NCO (Sgt. Don Skinner / operations and procedures, Sgt. Ski Kowalski / facilities and equipment, Sgt. Kanagawa coordinated the personal), and there were 7 other 601st enlisted men for transportation, ground power, communications and security, for the site.

The seven 123rd personnel assigned to the 601st Operations were:
“A” Crew Chiefs, Sgt, Gerry Hass and Jim (Jeff) Jeffries
“B” Crew Chiefs, R, David Hemmerle and Tomas Osborn
Communications / Maintenance, Tomas Gilligan
“C” Crew Chiefs, Sgt. Roger Hilbert and Sgt. Paul Holthouse

In Operations we maintained six target solutions, four for the Matador and two Ground Directed Bombing runs. These were re calculated every 2 hours for weather conditions (temperature, winds and air density etc.).

The 601st was under the Victor Alert and Rapid Response from Oct 1961 thru July 1962.
