Sembach AB - 823rd TMS (1964/66)

Gene, per my understanding, the 586th MMS designation was suspended 25 Sept. 1962 and reinstated 1 July 1964.

So, before 25 Sept. 1962 and after 1 July 1964, you were assigned to the 586th MMS.

From 25 Sept. 1962 until 1 July 1964, you were assigned to the 38th MMS DET 2.

-------------------------------------------------

Spring 1960
38th TAC Missile Wing
. 586th TAC Missile Group
. 586th Missile Maintenance Squadron

25 Sept. 1962 to 1 July 1964
38th TAC Missile Wing
. 38th Missile Maintenance Squadron - Detachment 2

1 July 1964 to 25 Sept. 1966
38th TAC Missile Wing
. 586th Missile Maintenance Squadron

-------------------------------------------------

As you have noted, many 38th TAC Missile Wing Special Orders (e.g., promotion orders) span more than one base. That\'s why you may find names of people that served at Hahn, etc. listed on 38th TMW orders that I have posted on www.SembachMissileers.org.

Regards,
Russ

I received orders in October 1962 assigning me to the 586th MMS at Hahn Air Base. Sometime during the first part of 1963 we were renamed Detachment 2 38th MMS. I have orders awarding me the Good Conduct Medal issued by the 50th Tact Fighter Wing on 26 July 1963 for personnel assigned to Det 2 38th MMS at Hahn. When I was reading some of the old orders on this web site, I see some names of guys I worked with on promotion orders in 1965 issued by 38th Tac Msl Wing at Sembach and they were listed as being assigned to the 586th MMS. Anybody know why the difference in unit desiganation? What were we ,586th MMS or Det 2 38th MMS?

Thanks to Bob and Russ for getting the newsletters onto the site in such a fine readable form! I joined in 2005, just in time for the Nashville reunion, and have the newsletters from that time forward. I find it very interesting to read the older ones from the early days of the organization, especially 2001, when TAC Missileers was becoming the organization we know today.
