Lowery (first class to be given A2C on graduation), 4504th (Training Element 868-2-2), then Taiwan (868 TMS, Launch Crew E). President Eisenhower visited our training launch at Cape Canaveral. If he had been a day or two later, he would have seen the live launch. If anyone is interested, I have a copy of the Tainan base newspaper that highlighted the 868TMS in pictures. I also have a 35mm slide of the squadron sign at Christmas showing a Matador pulling Santa's sleigh. Returned to the states in Sept 1961 and was cross-trained in Atlas F checkout equipment and assigned to the 556 SMS at Plattsburgh, NY. Retired in October 1978 as a MSgt at Bergstrom AFB, in Austin, Texas where I still live.

Without seeing any referance to many of us 'on location' in some of the volnerable postions,I wonder if I if even 'on location' is a known term - ('site') For 2 years we did without the comforts and security of a protected and very comfortable base. I keep thinking of what it was like to be ther with the refinement I see on this web site. I can say we had nothing like what I consider fun and games. It is short of duty, work and sleep we had. We were near the border with known positions, at one point we ordered not to shoot at unidentified aircraft flying overhead at night. Most of us knew that we had little to no chance of making it past the mission. But we were all ready to do what was required to keep the the bird on target

I never made it to the 'real AF' as a missile man. I was in ATC, at Lowry for five years. Had to go to OCS and flight school to get out our ATC. I was one of the instructors for the first launch officer class and first enlisted class to go through the Mace-A program. Later taught the Mace-B.

I would like to find out where some of the guys are that served during that time. 63-66. I had a great time in Germany and worked with some great guys. If you remember who I am.... send me a note. I will search and find some of my old buddies but I am having a hard time remembering some of them. Best Of Luck. 'Hammer'

The latest Missileer Newsletter had a request in CEO Joe's Corner to indicate our plans for the dinner cruise and the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday. I have looked back at all the previous newsletters regarding the reunion and I can't find any details on these events. ie.-cost, what is included etc. If you are just looking for how many are interested, I would say I am and it would be two people. I am hoping to make this reunion (my first)but I'm still working on travel plans.

In Regards to the message left by Herr Winfried Berg... As I live here in Germany, I called Herr Berg and we discussed what he is looking for. He lives in Hecken, a very small German town located near the old Site V, 405th TMS. He wants information on an 'Open House' at Site V which took place in January 1961, for the people of Hecken. Any photos or articles available? Also, he recalls an engine run-up site located somewhere near Site V. I was on a launch crew at Site V from Aug 61 to Aug 62 and do not recall an engine run-up site nearby. Maybe that was before my time there. If anyone has any recollections of the period of time of the 'Open House' or any other information, please pass it on to me so that I can contact him again. Thanks....
