lso looking to find Leonard Estrada (Hahn)
Updating Email address.
It is very nice to see these websites, and relate back to the historic eras. I am married to a veteran of WWII (Air Corps) 7th AF, 41st Bomb Group, 820th Bomb Squadron, and love to visit all of these things. We attend all of our reunions since they found us in 1989. My brother, Jim Nuckles had made several of these reunions with us. One in Boston and one in Little Rock, AK
It would be great to hear from anyone who served at either site at that time.
I was part of the 17th TMS. We went from Orlando to Taiwan in Nov 57. Lived in bamboo huts for a while, then moved off base until base housing could be built. Ate and drank at the Magambo when we wern't on alert duty.Except for Trimble I don't see anyone I was with. Capt. Halbert, Jack Ice, Jim Warth, Joe Tritch, Fred Wolfe, Dick Bibbs, Meuller, Beckage, Vancleve, Jones and others. I'll try and get some pictures on the site.
Anyone remember the launch officer's wife that would take 'cookies' to the guys in the barracks on the weekends? She was the only dependent I can remember being sent home by the base commander/
Boy this is great, as many have said before it sure brings back lot's of memories...
Just discovered this site after getting a phone call from a buddy (Ken Lunde) from Hahn 'out-of-the- blue' after 38 years. I was enlisted Missile Launch Technician right out of high school. I left Air Force in 1965 and went on through college to a PhD in Physics. Then I moved into computers and still do high-technology today in 'Silicon Valley' California. Missiles and electronics jump-started my technology career. The photos of the sites and missiles and various folks has bought back some fond memories. Thanks for the site. Jim
IN looking over the entries, I don't see anything from people in the Radar sites who would've guided the missiles/fighters to their targets. We were the 601st Tactical Control Squadron. I was in OL5 until the unit disbanded in Sep 62. My biggest memory was that our mission required 30-35 minutes to accomplish and it was estimated that the Russkys/East German Army could be at our location in 20 minutes! We tried not to think about it. Would love to hear from any other 601st types.
Good Site. This is a little long but I would like to hear from personnel that remember me. I am not sure I will make it to Denver. I have been on a heart transplant list in ST. Louis for almost 3 years. At this stage I don't like getting to far from home. Cross trained from Radio Relay in 59 to Test Equipment Maintenance (TEMS). From fall 59 to summer 61 I was at Orlando in the Support Squadron. In 61 went to Okinawa (with George Bennett and group). In 65 returned to Lowery as an instructor. 1966 I returned to Okinawa as an instructor at FTD 911L. Mainly taught Fundamentals of Solid State Devices. In 69 when we shut down (Halloween Day) I was awaiting the results of a request for special assignment so I did not return to the states with the rest of the people. I stayed in Okinawa until February 1970. Returned to Whiteman AFB as an electronic technician on the Minuteman. In 71 transferred to Chanute AFB as an instructor. Retired 1 May 75.
Great site! Brings back a lot of great memories. Would be great so see some of the guys again!
Was Gordon Fisk, from the earlier 'no e-mail address' entry, also at Minot in 1978 ?
Looking back on all the places & people has brought on a flood of memories! Gotta go dig out the old photo albums & see what I might also contribute. Correction: In one of the photos, there is a picture of a dragon in a missileer hat & smoking that was said to be hanging in the day room at Hahn. That fellow was the 89th TMS insignia creature; it was incorrectly labeled as the 405th TMS. The 405th was deactivated & the 89th was formed to replace it in the early sixties.
